That is not what the Catholic Church says. It is merely to be taken as a length of time. Also, the entire book of Genesis is not to be taken literally' Like fairy tales that we tell children to teach them a lesson, the book of Genesis was trying to explain humans. Actually, many of the stories in it were taken from other cultures of long ago and were changed a little to fit the monotheism tale instead of the multiple god (forget the word) version. Side not about Noah and the ark, the History Channel did an interesting thing on this. It made a lot of sense.

About the people living a long time. Back whenever these books were written, the way of saying someone was an important person was by giving them a large age. (Like how we exaggerate details of our stories to make them better).

About the reproduction inquiry: This is actually something I used to ask people a lot. One point is that just because the Bible does not mention it, God could very well have made more humans after Adam and Eve. (It would appear to be ridiculous to mention every person He made, the Book is long enough already :P ). But, I don't believe the Catholic Church takes the story literally either. I believe they say it is merely a way of explaining why we sin.

Tis all. That just sounds so ridiculous. I almost burst out laughing when I read that. No offense to your belief though. Obviously religion cannot not make sense from the logical perspective. This of course can be rebutted by those who's main focus in life is religion. God does not have to follow the rules that we currently live under and so he can do as he pleases.
From what I can recall about the Garden of Eden scenario, it was never actually mentioned that Adam and Eve ate an apple. The Bible only mentions it as the forbidden fruit and no further from what I can recall. Knowing how humans work, one priest in the distant past probably said, "It was an apple!" and so it has become tradition to say so.
Reasoning for Adam and Eve to live to long is sometimes explained by view of the amount of evil present in the world. At the beginning there was only original sin, but as more and more sins occurred the actual lifespan of the human being decreased due to the stress evil puts on the body. Thus we lived for such a small amount of time, currently I believe life expectancy is increasing not due to less sin in the world, it is far from it. Our great medical advancements have made a longer life possible despite our obvious sins against our Creator.
Noah's Ark makes no sense, period.
So basically my viewpoint on religion is that of course it makes little to no logical sense in our minds. It is rather a way for those who cannot make use of logic to have something to trust and pray to for guidance and support. Now of course this seems silly considering God may not even exist, but hope can change the lives of individuals that is seemingly unparalleled by any science.
I enjoyed reading this Mike and possibly we can discuss any of your past or future topics in the future.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
